History

The Joint Stock Company Coal Mine Pljevlja began its first serious steps in production activities in 1952 as the "Company for Coal Exploration and Production – Pljevlja". In the same year, with 37 employees, a "record" 16,200 tons of coal were produced. Between 1954 and 1964, the Coal Mine made extensive investments in modernization and built a coal separation facility in Potrlica, with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons. At that time, the Coal Mine produced 1.18 tons of coal per effective working hour.

The highest achieved annual level of production was recorded in 1985, when nearly 2,700,000 tons of high-quality lignite were produced.

The organizational structure of the Coal Mine changed in accordance with legal regulations and constitutional provisions. Since 1972, the Coal Mine has operated as a working organization with five, and after the establishment of "Borovica", six basic organizations of associated labor and two working communities. Based on the Law on Enterprises of 1990, the Coal Mine operated as a Socially-Owned Enterprise, and soon after, in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Energy and the Law on Public Enterprises, and by the Decision of the Parliament of Montenegro on organizational changes, it transformed into the Socially-Owned Enterprise Coal Mine – Pljevlja. Later, the Coal Mine was organized and operated as a Public Enterprise with full responsibility and headquartered in Pljevlja. Since October 18, 1999, the Coal Mine has operated as a Joint Stock Company.

Coal Mine AD Pljevlja, as the largest and most significant economic entity in the municipality of Pljevlja and one of the most important economic collectives in Montenegro, together with the Electric Power Company of Montenegro forms the main energy system of Montenegro, and thus its industrial and economic foundation. The Coal Mine marks September 24th as Miners’ Day.
